It's official! Christ Church URC Rayleigh is One Hundred years old. That's nothing to be sneezed at, in fact it is great reason to celebrate.
So in 2010 we have a rolling programme of events that help us look back at our rich history, but also bring the present into focus.
One of the major events is the narration of the Churches history in Hubert Smith's book, 'Christ Church Rayleigh - the first 100 years'. It is an excellent read, and opens up the history to both ‘old hands’ and those who are not familiar with this church. Also included is ‘Rayleigh Tabernacle’ by Reg Fletcher which looks specifically at the history of the building before it became a congregational chapel in 1910.
We are also gathering historic photographs and reminiscences of the past. Both provide a snapshot of the era in which they were located. The photographs are visual history that we are collecting for posterity, and we are expecting to produce a CDROM for purchase late in the year.
The Centenary Weekend on 10 & 11th July will be a time of joy as old friends and new get together. If you would like more information please contact the
(John Palmer).
Looking forward, the Centenary Project is a series of opportunities to give thanks financially for our 100 years by supporting our partner church, Budiriro Uniting Presbyterian Church in Harare, Zimbabwe. This young congregation needs it's own land and building and we are intending to help as much as we can. A large amount of fundraising has already taken place and events are ongoing. The Centenary Celebration therefore isn’t just for 2010 but with a new plot of land and eventually a new building in Zimbabwe, it’s effect will live on.
